Switzerland isn’t all about ski resorts and chocolate. This landlocked nation of 26 cantons encompasses historic towns, exceptional rail transport and heartracing Alpine adventures.

The Swiss have long been pioneers of sustainable travel, encouraging travellers to reduce their carbon emissions by exploring by rail. Many of its trains feature panoramic windows, making trundling through landscapes of snowy peaks and glacial lakes an essential part of any trip.

Switzerland’s cities like swanky Zurich or laid-back Bern embrace a mix of modern culture and rich history. Many urban centres have impeccably preserved Medieval architecture, with Lucerne’s 15th-century Altstadt (Old Town) a prominent example.

Relax at lakes like Lago Maggiore or Lago di Lugano and go hiking, climbing, or snowshoeing in the Alps, depending what time of year you visit. Adrenaline-seekers flock to Interlaken, dubbed the ‘Adventure Capital of Europe’, as it’s home to activities ranging from whitewater rafting and canyoning to paddleboarding and hiking.

But we really are just scratching the surface. With UNESCO-listed vineyards in Geneva, Italian-influenced culture in Ticino, cycle paths in Valais and Christmas market magic sprinkled across the country during the festive season, unique qualities can be enjoyed in every corner of Switzerland.

The months of March-May welcome colourful Alpine blooms and wildflowers, whereas autumn brings brilliant gold foliage. Harvest season also takes place from September-October, a great time for wine lovers to visit.

Getting around in Switzerland

There is no better way to explore Switzerland than by public transport. Purchase a Swiss Travel Pass to take full advantage of the efficient trains, boats and buses across the country.

This single ticket covers travel on public transport nationwide for three, four, six, eight or 15 consecutive days, plus entry to nearly 500 museums.

Health & safety

Switzerland is a very safe country. But do make sure you have the correct travel insurance to cover any specific activities you plan to participate in, from mountaineering to extreme sports such as canyoning and white-water rafting.

Be aware of potential altitude sickness if exploring mountainous areas.
