While many associate the Michelin Guide with high-end dining, the people behind it have also been recommending hotels since the 1920s, and currently recognise more than 5,000 worldwide, based on criteria such as design and service.
Now, in an update mirroring its famous ‘star ranking’ of restaurants, the guide is selecting the crème de la crème of hotels to be awarded a special ‘Michelin Key’, indicating those offering an outstanding experience.
The worthy few will be attributed one, two or three keys, and are judged on their architecture and interior design; service; personality and character; value for money; and how they contribute to the neighbourhood or setting.
Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide said: “The Michelin Key is a clear, reliable indicator for travellers. Just as the MICHELIN Star highlights those restaurants that are at the top of their game, the Michelin Key recognises the most exceptional hotels throughout the world.
“It is also an acknowledgment of the teamwork of committed, enthusiastic hospitality professionals.”
Keys are being announced in batches and by country, with the USA receiving some of the first Michelin Keys in the world.
Announced in April, 11 hotels were awarded Three Keys, 33 awarded Two Keys, and 80 awarded One Key across the USA. California and New York were the only states to gain hotels with a Three Key ranking: The Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, California and Aman New York were among them.
Italy hotels were also given some of the first Michelin Keys earlier in May, with nearly 150 establishments across the nation being recognised. Tuscany stands out with its Castello di Casole accomodation, a historic estate and a recipient of Two Keys. Whereas farmhouse charm can be experienced at the likes of Lupaia and Conti di San Bonifacio – both receiving One Key each.
France and Spain have also been among the first countries to receive the Michelin Key distinctions across many of their hotels.
